Design Fiction Workshops

We design workshops, co-creation experiences, and temporary innovation labs using our methodology around design fiction to suspend our disbelief about change. We have worked with government, corporations, universities, startups, and initiatives from the cultural sector, infused by experimentation to unlock new possibilities in our reality.

For 3+ years the Intervention Design minor at the ZUYD Universities MAMDT and iArts have incorporated Design Fiction Workshops via Imagination of Things into the semester's currriculum, invited by Theo Ploeg (Studio Hyperspace). Either in the two day Bootcamp, or with distributed classes throughout the quarter, students build fictional worlds, scenarios, and characters to develop a radical design idea, which is prototyped and documented at the end of each workshop.

Students have created things like a line of coats made from moss, a voice assistant that stutters, they've imagined transhumanism in e-commerce, and seed bombs as official legislation, among many other final projects.

Invited by Abdelrahman Hassan, Imagination of Things and the Digital Society School organized a three day workshop to learn and create your own chatbot, from the perspective of critical data studies (Hassan) and ideating their bots using a design fiction methodology (Imagination of Things). Participants created bots that initiated games for people to discuss social privilege, bots that made jokes and shared memes, and tongue-and-cheek experiences such as confessing to a bot how little you have been posting on social media, having a bot steal your data through an online cult, and navigating the highly exclusive, and increasingly rare, truly offline spaces that pepper the globe.

Blending design fiction, storytelling, and future speculation, Imagination of Things engaged an energetic group of young talents from Joanknecht, a business accounting firm, to embark in an experience to propose new possibilities and bring imagination to business innovation. The workshop culminated in an insights report to serve as a shareable content for Joanknecht, a conversation starter inside of the company.

Colleagues at Joanknecht invented things like a Question Mark Pin that enforces more humble questions in the workplace; Shuffle Fridays as a method to switch and play with the company hierarchy they were trying to break; and a Mix & Match service to include 'business therapy' where like-minded accountants are paired up with the client's culture and attitude towards business.

A small and diverse group of people got together in Lisbon at the co-working space, TODOS, for 2 days to imagine the city in its near future. Participants collectively imagined radical scenarios emerging from a city reinventing itself. Lisbon 2032 had a few ground rules or initial provocations for our world building structure: 1) Retirement is abolished 2) Cities became more politically relevant than nations 3) Lisbon can foresee its natural disasters.

The group discussed and created projects around the reinvention of work as a concept, local currencies, the aging society the clash between old and new generation, and how the social issues regarding gender would be framed in this near future.

At Creativity World Forum, Imagination of Things in collaboration with Baltan Laboratories held a test session with Fabricating Alternatives a digital tool designed to accompany design fiction workshops. Participants got a taste of this co-creation methodology, quickly created in under 2 hours inventions, or tangible prototypes that exist in this alternative/fictional reality and presented them to each other.

With Baltan Laboratories, Imagination of Things held a workshop to test and initiate a research proposition around using machine learning, text generation, and gpt-2 to stimulate and remix the ideas inside of a design fiction workshop. Participants defined their directions to explore and fed a prototype machine articles and writings that they chose, and looked for inspiration in the text output to provoke them towards a fictional story prompt. From there, they created a fictional world and inventions to prototype and present. This design fiction workshop yielded insights for Fabricating Alternatives a digital tool designed to accompany design fiction workshops.
